  • Transport arranged by Samuka Island: You can opt for a more economical choice, with transport available for Ush 270,000 (~$75), subject to the current exchange rate.

From Kampala

For those traveling from Kampala, the distance to Jinja can vary between 80 km and 96 km, depending on your chosen route. Traffic conditions will greatly affect your travel time, which could take anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Here are your options:

  • Private Taxi: Expect to pay around $80-$100 for a private taxi.
  • Public Transport: If you’re looking to save, public transportation costs approximately Ush 10,000 (~$3).
  • Samuka Island transport service: Another option is arranging a private taxi through Samuka for Ush 220,000 (~$62).

If you’re coming from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, several private bus companies operate night services to Kampala, allowing you to disembark directly in Jinja:

  • Bus Tickets: Buses depart from Nairobi between 4 PM and 7 PM and reach Jinja by morning, typically between 7 AM and 11 AM. Tickets for VIP or business-class seats will typically cost around Ksh 4,600 (~$40), and this option is highly recommended for comfort.

  • Boda Boda Taxis (motorcycle taxis) are also readily available throughout Jinja for approximately Ush 3,000-5,000 (~$0.80-$1.40). If you prefer a private taxi, it can be arranged for Ush 30,000 (~$8.50). This mode of transport will take you from Jinja to the Source of the Nile where boats are available.
